The scenes from the protest in Sydney on 9 February, where tensions escalated and protesters were met with significant police force, were deeply distressing and confronting. They do not reflect the values of a safe, democratic Australia, and we share the concerns expressed by many of our members and the broader community.

This incident comes at a time when many people are already feeling anxious, divided and under pressure. Violence, intimidation and fear must never be accepted or normalised in Australia in 2026. Nurses and midwives see every day the human impact of trauma, conflict and distress. We know that safety, dignity and respect are fundamental in every setting, and these principles must guide how governments and authorities engage with communities, including when people exercise their democratic rights.

The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives' Association has called for an independent inquiry into the use of force and the level of aggression directed toward protesters. Their statement also reaffirms the fundamental right to peaceful assembly and their opposition to the NSW Government’s amendments to the Roads Act and Crimes Act, which have increased barriers to lawful protest.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation stands with our colleagues in New South Wales and all those advocating for the protection of democratic freedoms. The right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy and must be safeguarded. We call on governments to work constructively with communities, ensure transparency and accountability in policing responses, and take meaningful steps to reduce division and strengthen trust across our society.
